Over the decades, the annual birthday celebrations of the former Queen
of the Netherlands, Juliana of Orange, on April 30th, have expanded
to a National Event. Especially in the country's capital Amsterdam,
where the whole inner city changes into a huge fleemarket. Once a
symbol of the |

regained freedom after
a 5 year occupation, it has become an international tourist attraction.
In the preceeding days, the streets and pavements are marked with
lines and names to reserve or claim a space for the big day's selling,
buying and drinking spree. It's another great example illustrating
Dutch space management and control, improvising with an ever so inventive,
yet fuctional Dutch typography for its signage. |
